In a statement issued this Friday, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, Chairperson of the AU Commission, noted that the initiative’s emphasis on the immediate cessation of hostilities, the protection of the civilian population, respect for international humanitarian law, and the safeguarding of maritime security reflects the essential components for containing the current crisis.

Youssouf reiterated his “deep concern about the continued escalation of tensions in the region” and stressed that its effects are already impacting energy supply chains, food systems, and economic stability globally, particularly in Africa, a continent already facing multiple intersecting challenges.

The foreign ministers of China, Wang Yi, and Pakistan, Ishaq Dar, presented a five-point proposal in Beijing, calling for an immediate ceasefire, the start of peace negotiations as soon as possible, the protection of non-military targets, the security of maritime routes, and respect for the UN Charter.

Islamabad and Beijing also demanded “that humanitarian aid be allowed into all war-affected areas,” in accordance with the principles of international law.

This situation has generated uncertainty in global markets and intensified calls for dialogue from various international actors.

Given this scenario, the Chairperson of the AU Commission asserted that “a lasting solution can only be achieved through dialogue and negotiated solutions.” The African Union’s position complements ongoing diplomatic efforts to contain the escalation of the conflict and promote a negotiation framework that prioritizes the protection of civilians and regional stability.

The initiative by Beijing and Islamabad seeks to establish the foundations for a political resolution to the conflict, in accordance with the principles of sovereignty and non-interference enshrined in international law.
